  17. <p>    Savvy sports fans had seen it coming since the Summer
  18. Olympics in Barcelona: MAGIC JOHNSON, the world's most
  19. recognized basketball player, would make a triumphant return to
  20. the N.B.A. And last week that's just what he did. After less
  21. than a year in retirement, Johnson, who'd announced he was
  22. infected with HIV, says he is ready to come back to the court.
  23. The much loved Magic plans to play 50 to 60 of the season's 82
  24. games for his team, the Los Angeles Lakers. He has got the green
  25. light from doctors and received nothing but support from former
  26. teammates, fans and friends. Topping all the warm wishes: a
  27. hefty $14.6 million extension on his contract.
